Let’s be realistic. In this day and age, anyone who finds the one and two in four-four time can craft lukewarm sample beats or random electronic instrumental stylings. The combination of the analogue and synthetic, different textures and musical splinters however is what really makes it the most important musical art form postmodernism (re-)invented. Which is exactly where Free The Robots aka Chris Alfaro comes into play. Hailing from Santa Ana, California, Free The Robots utilises a room full of instruments, controllers, and old records in an ongoing quest for the harmony within the chaos and the dissonant. Drawing inspiration from everything between psych, jazz, electronic and the worldwide beat movement, he proved a perfect counterpart for the likes of The Gaslamp Killer (on their split EP The Killer Robots in 2010), Nocando, or avant-garde super MC Busdriver. Free The Robots’ first physical album Ctrl Alt Deletesaw the light of day in 2011 via Alpha Pup.
